The Ordre des Palmes académiques, established by Napoleon I in 1808, is the oldest civil honor bestowed by the French state. This prestigious order recognizes outstanding contributions to national education and culture. While primarily intended for personnel of the Ministry of National Education, it also distinguishes individuals who have rendered significant services to education or made exceptional contributions to cultural enrichment.
