Dr. Anaïs Roger from CIML receives Aix-Marseille University's Thesis Award
CIML is proud to announce that Dr. Anaïs Roger, a young researcher trained at our institute in Sophie Ugolini's team as a doctoral student, has received the prestigious Aix-Marseille University Thesis Award for her remarkable work defended in 2023.
Each year, Aix-Marseille University grants this prestigious award to recognize the excellence of research conducted by its doctoral students, highlighting the most significant scientific contributions from its laboratories.
Anaïs Roger's thesis, entitled "Regulation of antiviral immune response by the sensory nervous system", was distinguished among the most exemplary works at the university, demonstrating the excellence and innovation of her research at the interface between immunology and neurobiology. Anaïs Roger investigated the complex interactions between the immune system and the sensory nervous system during viral infections. Her research highlighted how sensory neurons, in response to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection in the skin, produce neuropeptides that regulate the recruitment of pro-inflammatory immune cells, particularly neutrophils. This fundamental discovery reveals a crucial mechanism: this neuronal control is essential both for the repair of damaged tissues and for the induction of a CD8+ T lymphocyte response capable of effectively eliminating virus-infected cells.
Professor Eric Vivier, CIML Team Leader, receives the prestigious Fondation ARC Léopold Griffuel Award
The CIML is honored to announce that Professor Eric Vivier, team leader at CIML and former director of the institute (2008-2017), has been awarded the prestigious Fondation ARC Léopold Griffuel Award in the "Translational and Clinical Research" category.
Established in 1970, the Fondation ARC Léopold Griffuel Award is one of the most significant European awards in cancer research. Endowed with €150,000, this prize annually honors researchers whose work has led to major breakthroughs in understanding cancer mechanisms or developing new therapeutic approaches. It is named after Léopold and Alice Griffuel, who bequeathed their assets to cancer research, demonstrating their profound commitment to this cause.
Awarded by the ARC Foundation for cancer research, this internationally renowned prize recognizes the excellence of Professor Vivier's work in the field of cancer immunology. His pioneering research on NK (Natural Killer) cells and their role in immune surveillance of tumors has paved the way for new therapeutic approaches.CIML welcomes this recognition, which highlights the excellence of French immunology research and the driving role our institute plays in international scientific advances.

At the crossroads of biology and medicine, immunology is a scientific discipline that focuses on the operating mechanisms of the immune system. Appeared early in the evolution, this system enables living organisms to defend themselves against pathogens or their own components when they are altered. It involves a large number of cells whose capacity for cooperation, recognition and memory are far from having revealed all their secrets.
