The transposon is thus inserted within a gene that is homologous to the CC2959 gene, that encodes a DJ-1/PfpI family protein (see Pfam).

This family includes ThiJ a thiamine biosynthesis enzyme, the protease PfpI, as well as transcriptional regulators.

Thus, BLASTP with CC2959 (results here) identifies a number of functionally distinct proteins.

Interestingly, a human homologue (see BLAST2 results) DJ-1 (http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/1077209)has very recently been shown to be involved in early onset parkinsonism and may play a rôle in the oxidative stress response .
