Analysis of the individual fragments (here) shows that in fact the transposon is between two genes, orientated in the same sense. It is downstream of one homologous to mgtC and upstream of a homologue of mgtB. Both encode highly conserved putative Mg(2+) transport ATPase proteins.

In Salmonella, the two transporters occur within a Pathogenicity Island (SPI-3), and are under the control of the PhoP/PhoQ two-component system that is essential for virulence.
