The transposon is thus between two genes, homologous to mgtC and mgtB, both encoding putative Mg(2+) transport ATPase proteins.

STRING analysis of mgtC (see colour code) and mgtB (see colour code) indicates that cation transport ATPases are also found together in operons in other bacteria, but not in Pseudomonas.

In Salmonella, the two transporters occur within a Pathogenicity Island (SPI-3), and are under the control of the PhoP/PhoQ two-component system that is essential for virulence.
