Follicular lymphomas: two early molecular events at their origin
An Inserm team at the Marseille-Luminy Immunology Center has identified the earliest mutations involved in the development of follicular lymphoma, a rare blood cancer. In about a third of patients, the researchers have identified two genetic alterations that drive the cells into a pathological state, almost ten years before the onset of symptoms. This meticulous work is leading to a better understanding of this hematological cancer, and opens the way to new therapeutic avenues to intervene early and avoid relapse in a large number of cases.

How Blood Stem Cells Detect Pathogens and Guide Immune Response
Correct immune system function depends on the continuous supply of white blood cells derived from stem cells that reside in the bone marrow. These are known as blood stem cells or hematopoietic stem cells. Researchers from Inserm, CNRS and Université d’Aix-Marseille at the Center of Immunology Marseille-Luminy have now discovered a new role played by these cells in immune response.

Mauro GAYA, new member of the EMBO Young Investigators Programme

EMBO announces 24 scientists as the newest members of the EMBO Young Investigator Programme. The programme supports excellent group leaders who have been in independent positions for less than four years and have an excellent track record of scientific achievements.
The new EMBO Young Investigators will join the existing network of 135 current and 390 former members of the programme. They will receive financial and practical support for a period of four years, starting in January 2023.
More information
At the crossroads of biology and medicine, immunology is a scientific discipline that focuses on the operating mechanisms of the immune system. Appeared early in the evolution, this system enables living organisms to defend themselves against pathogens or their own components when they are altered. It involves a large number of cells whose capacity for cooperation, recognition and memory are far from having revealed all their secrets.
